WOW! A raptor just flew right over my head <!-- s:duck: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/duck.gif" alt=":duck:" title="Fear" /><!-- s:duck: --> it had a white under wing, speckled with a black mosaic, I barely had time to look at it, let alone get my camera, any idea of what it could be, I have a friend who said he saw a white kite, in this area and my brother saw a raptor swoop up a rat, although that might have been an owl. This is my first time seeing anything of the sort. Anyone have an idea of what it could be? This is one heck of a birding week for me (considering I've started birding 1 year ago and haven't seen two hard-to-see birds in one week) I'll post a picture of the other one a little later when I have time, although regular birders won't find it to be as much of a rare sighting as I have.
Please help, with identifying my raptor. I couldn't have the slightest clue of what it is.

You will have to try and give some more clues. Did you get an idea of the size? Was it very large or smaller like a big pigeon? where was the mosaic colouring, on the chest, back, underwing, somewhere else? Did you see patterns on the tail?

There are quite a few features that would be needed to help you identify it. Maybe have a look through your bird books at the drawings of the raptors in flight and see if you can find one that matches.

the only question of those that I can answer, is its size. for the second of seeing it, I thought it was an African sacred ibis! but those wing markings, which I saw for a brief split second, had some sort of a mosaic. Odd considering my largest contender to be the black shouldered kite, which does not have those markings. sorry to say I could not see it in detail, nor could I see its beak. when looking in my bird book, the lizard buzzard seems to jog my memory. Anyone seen one here?

there's one from the Joburg zoo, so it could be an escapee.
