I spent the weekend 125 km NW of Santiago, at the small coastal resort town of Zapallar. Below a few photos taken along the shore.

First the familiar Black-crowned Night Heron, one of a handful of birds that are common to Chile and South Africa - but maybe not so familiar sitting on rocks with the breakers crashing around him.

A bird that I am encountering a lot, so must be a common sight along the central Chile coast, a Whimbrel

The commonest gull, this a fully adult plumaged bird of probably >3 years old - Kelp Gull

Rufous-tailed Plantcutter - this one an immature male

One of the Chilean flycatchers, Fire-eyed Diucon

Every fishing port has its colony of Peruvian Pelican - these a non-breeding plumage adult (female?), a breeding adult (male?) and a juvenile (right, with the brown head and neck)

...and the bonus for the weekend, a lifer in Chilean Seaside Cinclodes. This large (22 cm) bird is a rocky shoreline specialist.
