This second posting is of some of the water birds that can be found not only in the coastal lagoons and estuaries, but also on inland rivers and dams.

First, three grebes -

The South American equivalent of the Great Crested Grebe, the Great Grebe


The resident White-tufted Grebe.....


...and the winter migrant from southern Chile, the Silvery Grebe


Next, two of the three common coots of central Chile -

Red-gartered Coot, one having a close encounter with a Coypu




White-winged Coot - 2 individuals with a Red-gartered Coot, note the difference in frontal shield colouration



The Chilean equivalent of the Black-headed and Grey Herons - the Cocoi Heron


If the feet were visible you would see that they are yellow. The Snowy Egret bears a strong resemblance to the Little Egret.


Finally two swans...

A true swan, the Black-necked Swan....


....and the Coscoroba Swan, probably more closely related to the shelducks
