Just a little over 8 months since my first weekend birding excursion in Chile I returned to the same locality, the El Yeso valley south-east of Santiago - a drive of 116km from Santiago winding ever higher and higher into the Andes. The object of the exercise to try and find the near threatened Diademed Plover (aka Diademed Sandpiper-Plover) one of the gems of Andean birding. This rather unusual stocky plover, a little bigger than our Three-banded Plover, is a specialist of high altitude seeps and bogs. Unusual in that for a plover it has a very sandpiper-like bill.

A little below 3,000m elevation we arrived at a spot where a seep from a hot springs has resulted in a boggy area and small stream - in the central foreground in the picture below.

...and from a different angle, again the boggy area is in the central foreground.

If anyone is wondering what is on the signboard on the left of this image - In the event of a volcanic eruption......!!!!!!

As you might imagine this pre-amble is setting the scene because we did find not one Diademed Plover, but a pair with two recent fledglings. All four birds have been ringed recently as part of a project to try to find out where the birds from the central Chilean Andes migrate to in winter.

At the same spot we encountered two other species -

Greater Yellow Finch - male and female (and yes that is snow)

Rufous-rumped Miner

There were three other lifers during the day -

Scaly-throated Earthcreeper

Black-billed Shrike-Tyrant

Black-fronted Ground Tyrant

- as well as few of the commoner species in the area

Grey-hooded Sierra Finch - female

Grey-breasted Seedsnipe - male

White-browed Ground Tyrant

Yellow-billed Teal

Yellow-rumped Siskin - female
