Woke up at 3am to an unfamiliar call in the garden... Freckled Nightjar!!!

Sure beats the usual Johannesburg nightly noises of someone trying to break in.... (Breaking glass, alarms, gun fire etc, imagine that ... Actually being woken to the sound of nature... Spooky!)

Cheers,
Gordon

I think the SABAP2 would like to know so I can submit details for you. Can you tell me where in Bryanston and when? Used to have them years ago on the Boshkop koppie but not for a long time.R
Regards
Andy

I have seen them a few times in my in-laws garden in Athol JHB. So not altogether an uncommon sighting for JHB.

Good to hear that! I personally have not seen or hear them for some years. Used to also be in the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens where plenty of suitable habitat is available. However access is strictly limited to daytime hours so difficult to establish!
