Paid my 3rd visit to the Batuco Wetlands today. After all the winter rain and snow in the Andes I had to park further away than on my previous visits as there was a distinct risk of getting even a 4x4 stuck. I reckon I grew a good 5cm with the mud clinging to my boots! The birds were not as accessible since the water level had risen slightly and I could not get as close I would have liked. Nevertheless I got a good bino view of my one lifer for the day, a rapidly receding Cocoi Heron - the Chilean cousin of the Grey and Black-headed Herons. As with Marievale, even when the birding is not too good, hang around and there will always be something to photograph.

Chimango Caracara

Snowy Egret

Chilean Swallow

White-backed Stilt

Red-gartered Coot

...in company here with a White-tufted Grebe. Like my first trip the grebe stays well in distance. With patience I might get a decent shot yet.

Chiloe Wigeon and Yellow-billed Teal

Red Shoveller

Cinnamon Teal
