Spent the day at Big Tree in Woodville (behind Wilderness in the Garden Route).
The 2km walk around the forest patch is always very productive. But I still have not been able to catch my Knysna Woodpecker….. Heard it tap, heard it call, and for all my efforts, the only woody to oblige was an olive woodpecker.
I have decided that forest birds are mission to photograph, so please excuse excessive number of cloacal shots of birds in the canopy, twigs and branches all over the place, and the awful quality of the pictures…. I guess they were shot late afternoon under the canopy, at max aperture f/5.6, ISO3200 and around 1/50sec, handheld!! I think I need a giant flash with a better beamer (hint for Christmas). Anyhow… enjoy
Chorister Robin

Terrestrial Brownbul

Puffback shrike…. Weird to see them as forest birds.

Grey cuckoo shrike

Cape Batis

Bar throated apalis

Well done on getting those shots!

Shooting in forest is incredibly difficult!

Cheers,
Gordon

Great sightings Mossie. The pictures are a bonus! I agree that forest-birding is a different ball game. What worked well for me at Ndebegeni waterfall was to stay on the edge of the forest and wait for the birds to seek the sun. Cheers

Lovely sightings and photos, Mossie.

I just love this spot. Spend plenty of hours there myself and had some great sightings through the years.

I was there just 3 weeks ago.

As for the Knysna Woodpecker. They don't exist anymore.

Do you mean that was a recording of the last extant woodpecker that you planted somewhere in the canopy?

WTM it truely is a good spot. Last time I was there we got a Narina trogon and a red breasted sparrowhawk.

Wow, great sightings there, mossie, especially the Rufous-chested Sparrowhawk!
I had some good views of African Emerald Cuckoo there in summer. It is also a good spot for Knysna Warbler. The outskirts of the forest is also superb for Forest Buzzard.

Just outside Hoekwil I spotted a Black-winged Lapwing 3 weeks ago.

Where did you stay? Are you still down there?

My wife has just taken a post at the George Municipal hospital, so I have tagged along, and spend alternate weeks working from home in George and travelling up to GP for meetings etc.

I still need to post some decent pictures of birds from my "new patch" overlooking Kingswood Golf Estate. The forst buzzards are resident here, I see them everyday from my "office", so the Guinefowl are a touch nervous

When I find that @#$%^ lapwing I'll let you know

Everytime I see a lush green field I stop the car and stare at it hopefully......Kids are starting to worry about Dad's state of mind

pm me if you are in the area...

I should be in that area again soon. Will PM you. :D

The old proefplaas between George and the airport is also a great spot for Black-winged Lapwing. Ask for special permission to enter there.

I birded quite a bit at the Garden Route Botanical Gardens lately. It is a lovely spot too! Picked up Swee Waxbill, Grey Cuckooshrike, Cape Sugarbird (male and female) and African Palm-Swift(scarce for the area) there as some of the highlights. If you are into frogging, Bronze Caco is also common.
