I went back to the Yerba Loca reserve this morning in the hope that I could walk further up the valley than I did 2 weeks ago, but winter beat me to it. The first two photos show what greeted me today, the second photo taken from almost the same spot as the one I posted 2 weeks ago.

Surprisingly the snow did not deter the avian population. I added 5 species to my Chile list, 5 to my photo list, and 10 species that I did not see at Yerba Loca 2 weeks ago!

I began the day seeing what are becoming the "usual suspects" in Chile.

Chilean Mockingbird

Long-tailed Meadowlark - this one a male

Grey-hooded Sierra-Finch - male and female

Common Diuca-Finch - male

First lifer of the day was one of the two widely distributed woodpeckers - Chilean Flicker

A few did not seem to mind the snow too much -

Bar-winged Cinclodes

Grey-flanked Cinclodes

One of central Chile's flycatchers is the Fire-eyed Diucon - a very drab bird apart from that ruby-coloured eye

Great Shrike-Tyrant

The ecological niche of our African Black Duck is filled by the aptly named Torrent Duck - this one a male

I ended the day pushing my lens to the limit with some rather distant raptors, but the results were good enough for positive IDs.

American Kestrel - male

Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle

and finally, the one I have been waiting for! The Andean Condor :D
