the last malachite i got at the bus stop hide, the other three at hadeda at marievale.the last three pics caused a little problem as i was not alone in the hide. there where a couple there with me who arrived about an hour after i got there, i was trying to see the flufftail with no luck. anyway
the couple started to use a pda to call birds in,they started with the african rail which surprisingly worked and only called it for about 45 seconds which i was cool with, the malachites where flitting around all morning and there where a few of them as well and also quite close as shown with my pics.anyway they started calling the malachites and continued for about 5 minutes, i then asked them to stop calling as i noticed that the birds where not coming close anymore. Maybe the chap was having a bad day he got a little upset with me and told me to mind my own business. My experience with birders has always been of really down to earth folk who have a love for there hobby especially amoungst the folk on this site. i was taken aback to say the least and having heard that the folk from outdoor photo using extensive malachite playback at this hide had chased the malachite away for along time i voiced this opinion explaining to them it was not a good practice to use such extensive playback. i was told in no uncertain terms that they where there to take pictures and not id birds and if i did not like it i should leave.
i am not a small person but i am very easy going and am not one who likes confrontation but i am a birder who takes pics and not the other way round, i had my say and left. i just hope that the birds will stick around for other birders to enjoy as they where really right in front of the hide i would say about 4 to 5 metres.unfortunately i spent about another 4 hours at the sanctuary and kept bumping into these folk who continued to call birds whenever close to me. i was joined by an afrikaans guy called Bertus at the bus stop hide who actually threatened them with bodily harm if they did not stop and they left.i have had a couple of run in"s with folk like this over the years but never like this and remember Doug mentioning in a post about some one at Rietvlei also being crazy stupid with him.

Awesome photos, arty! Very well done!

Some people can really become super idiots. I also prefer to scrum away form confrontation but if it followed me around like it followed you I would also have taken Bertus' stand in the end.

The inconsiderate behaviour of people have taken to new heights lately. It is evident on our roads and shopping centres and now apparently in bird hides too. Just this morning I was wishing that I had an old WW2 Tiger tank so that I could drive right over inconsiderate misfits and demolish the tools they practice their behaviour with. And if I can't haul them in, I could just blow them up with the canon!

I have had similar experiences though fortunately not with such aggressive people. All the ones I have come across stopped playing the call after I explained the effect it was having on the bird and territorial behaviour.

This site is very lucky to have the fanastic community that it has!!

Cheers,
Gordon

You know some people are just ignorant about the effects of playback.
Well done for pointing out to them that prolonged calling is not good and hopefully they won't return again with their gadgets and Bertus won't need to resort to bodily harm.
Who knew birders could be so rough
