I just wanted to share an unbelievable sighting with you guys. I live in Hillcrest, Natal in a residential suburb next to a school.
Yesterday afternoon I was sitting in the lounge when I noticed a movement outside. I looked and saw what looked like a very small crake walking under the boat trailer. It then proceeded to the tap and had a bath in a very small cup sized bowl lying under it. As if that was not spectacular enough, the next thing I saw 3 or 4 little chicks scramble past. I rushed for my camera and bird book at the same time. I could not get a shot but the bird book identified it as a Buff-spotted flufftail, my first flufftail sighting!! In my own garden!!! I am delighted and hope they hang around.
About 2 months ago we heard a very eerie call at night for probably 3 or 4 nights and we thought it was some kind of frog. Then it went quiet again. Now when I ID'd the flufftail and played its call I realise that was the flufftail calling;-)
Very exciting!

Awesome sighting Jo-Anne - and seeing that you're just around the corner from me, I'm hoping you'll give me a call when you next see them so that we can both get some pics!!

OK, so just as I sat down to wait for the flufftail it did me the favour of appearing!! The male had a brief bath and the female rushed past with her chicks.
Dave, if they were keen to "kuier" I would invite you but they hardly give me a chance to get my camera;-)

Enjoy this photo and hoepfully I get the chance to get more (with the chicks and female).

regards
Jo

Glad they came back Josey!
At the bird bath in the Nahoon Estuary Reserve they were quite habitual, coming for a bath every evening around the same time (until the bush was cut back but a non-birding gardener!)
Enjoy anymore sightings you have!
