Hi all,

Spotted my first Black Kite in JHB in over three years!

Seen in the Paulshof area.

Cheers,
Gordon

They have been very scarce. Saw one flying over spur on my birthday in broadacres.

I will admit to having been extremely busy for the last year with not too much time for birding, so there have probably been a lot more around?

I'm not so sure. I am on the road all the time consulting and I just have not seen any. I am sure numbers are down.

What has probably also changed the dynamic is the closing of the London road landfill. That used to attract hundreds of Black Kites, white storks, Steppe Buzzards.

With that closed, I think the supply of raptors too the fourways/Rivonia area has been cut off.

My impression is also that of far fewer Milvus Kites comparing Atlas Project SABAP1 SABAP2 records[1980-90 versus 2007-]that I have done over the years. In addition to the London Road site a large pig farm out near the Lion Park that used to attract large flocks has also gone. Coincidentally I saw a single YBK today flying west down Republic Road near M-Net. In the southern KNP this past weekend I also only saw only a single YBK and no Black Kites at all with none on the road to and from the KNP so perhaps it is not just Gauteng where the numbers are down this year.

On Saturday afternoon we saw 6 Kites (they were too high to id), flying over the Helderfontein/Beverley area, and this morning I saw 4 in the same airspace. Once again all I could see was the forked tails, by the time I had fetched my binoculars they were gone.

I saw 3 Kites in the Kyalami area this morning on my way to work - obviously did not have my bins with me but one seemed to have a much less deeply forked tail and could possibly have been a Black Kite - but cannot be sure unfortunately :(

See them pretty regular from my office in New Centre,Joburg. We have that huge landfill/rubbish dump next to the Turffontien Racecourse which attracts large numbers of birds.Have seen both kites, pallid harrier, white stork, gulls, terns from nearby wemmer pan,and late november a steppe buzzard.
