My dad works at a cattle feedlot that supplies carcasses to Mynhardt Sadie at the Kempenfeldt Vulture Restaurant outside Dundee in South Africa and this December I had the priviledge to visit the hide for a few hours one morning. I had to be dragged away kicking and screaming because it was such a pleasure to sit there and watch them in action. We had about 100 vultures at one stage, but up to 500 have been counted!

We saw Cape Vulture, whitebacked vulture, lappet faced vulture, yellow billed kite, marabu stork, white stork and pied crows, but the real gem was seeing 2 monitors (not sure if rock or water - help?) at the kill. They were not bothered by the vultures and even hissed at a kite at one stage. They kept dragging off bits of carcass to a spot behind bushes and we are wondering whether they are feeding their young or if they are stashing the food for later. Any ideas on this?

The hide is really stunning. It feels like a cave and is equiped with a kettle and refreshments, bathroom and holes for cameras. I easily could spend a weekend there and the house is just as interesting - an igloo shaped into a "cave" with 2 rooms, a huge lounge and a stunning deck with a scope set up so you can watch the vultures from a distance as well. The kitchen is fully equiped and there is a sleeper couch in the lounge as well. They also have a swimming pool to cool off in.

Please note that the road is not suitable for a normal car - you either need a 4x4 or make arrangements with Mynhardt to collect you at a safe point and take you there.

Kempenfeldt ROCKS!!

I spent a weekend there in September and it was awesome...

Unusual seeing the monitor there! It is giving the jackals and bushpigs competition. <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: -->

My dad gave me a link to another article here on SA Birding, which is how I heard about it. I bullied him into taking me there :)
