We set out for Marievale to assist some birders in getting African Quailfinch for their lifelists.

We all met at the Picnic Site at Marievale on Sunday the 19th of Feb. there were 12 of us in total. The morning got off to a promising start with a fine view of an African Marsh Harrier swopping down over the reed beds opposite the Picninc site.

We then set off on our walk. Much too the frustration of myself and Gordon, who were trying to get the Quailfinch for our group, we heard plenty of them, but in the beginning we struggled. We had to console ourselves with listening to lots of Common Quails calling although we never managed to see these either. We also got a good range of Cisticolas with Levaillant's, Zitting, Wingsnapping and Cloud cisticola present.

A bit down the road we managed to get a brief glimpse of the Quailfinch for a fair number of our group as it took off from the road.

At the old farm building we picked up the Barn Owls and continued on.

At the crossroads just past the old farm bulding, the muddy manure dump offered up excellent vieews of both Yellow Wagtail and Black-winged Pratincole which really made the morning as some members of the group got three lifers for the morning.

We finished off at the picnic site having coffee after a three hour walk and a Black Heron flew up into the dead tree and waited patiently while Joel Avni let me take pics of it through his Swarovski scope.

All in all a very succesfull morning, even though some of the group did not manage to see the Quailfinch.
