Hi All,

Just returned from a nice 2 week trip to the garden route and De Hoop.

Managed to notch up a good few lifers as Ive not spent much time in these areas before.

Very happy to have discovered the superb wetland birding at De Hoop Nature Reserve which has a massive vlei that runs for 19km or so and supports a huge amount of water bird life.

Nice sightings of amongst others: greater flamingo, great white pelican, great crested grebe, cape shoveller, hottenot teal, spur winged goose, african spoonbill, black crowned night heron, and an amazing abundance of red knobbed coots.

Walks around the rocky areas and fynbos yielded southern double collared and malachite sunbirds, southern tchagra, southern boubou, karoo prinia, white throated canary, fiscal flycatcher, rock and brown throated martins, and African black swift. On the dunes near the beach rock kestrel, and black oystercatcher.

De Hoop, although quite isolated is definitely a recommended birding destination. I would love to see it in summer.

Other notable sightings and lifers for me :

Half collared kingfisher – Tour River, Wilderness
Grey Cuckoo Shrike – Tsitsikamma Forest
Knysna Lourie - Tsitsikamma Forest
Pale Winged Starling – Camdeboo
