As your total gets higher it gets increasingly difficult to get any lifers....

Check my list and I managed to add two from the Cape Trip.

Karoo Lark from West Coast NP and finally a fly by of Common Quail from teh overberg region (farms near Stanford). In fact last time I was in teh exact same spot only one bird flew past and could not be certain it was Common Quail and not a female of one of the other species. This time the male and female flew past... ID clinched and my first confirmed view of Common Quail.

627!!! getting there.

Hoping to get Karen to her 200 on our next outing. and 300 by the end of the year should be fairly easy.

We're hoping to reach 200 by the end of next month. From the 2nd to the 6th we'll be staying here www.mydogbella.co.za and visiting Golden Gate, Witsiehoek and Sterkfontein Dam nature reserves. At that altitude (about 1800m above sea level) and so far out of Gauteng, we should see a lot of species we haven't seen here. Looking at the species list for Golden Gate alone there are 147 that are not yet on our list so I don't think 28 in four days between the three reserves is an unreasonable expectation. :D

Nothing specific we're looking for really, just anything that's not on our list yet (which is a lot of birds!). Obviously we'd like to see the Bearded Vulture and we know that both Golden Gate and Sterkfontein have vulture restaurants, so we're hoping to tick that one. So far we have only one vulture on our list (White Backed), so hopefully the restaurants will produce a couple more for us.

Any good birding areas you can point us in the direction of will be greatly appreciated. As the majority of out birding so far has been done in Gauteng, we're pretty sure we'll increase our list significantly down there. Bear in mind (are you reading this, Mossie? ) we're in a Kia Picanto so we need to stick to tarred roads or good quality gravel roads with not too many potholes.

Hi Dave

Of coarse I'm reading this.

As far as I can see, the only advantage to birding in a Kia Picanto, is that you can fold it up and take it on the plane as hand luggage

I think you have intimidated me. i am too scared to suggest anything again.

You're right about the Picanto, Mossie, I once had an old Saab 9000 (predecessor to the 95) and I could have got the Picanto in the boot of that. We've been on some rough roads with it but the one leading to Mountain Sanctuary Park was the only one that defeated us and made us turn back. It's OK though, no need to feel intimidated and I promise I won't mention it again! One day, when we win the lotto and get a 4x4 we'll come and pick up you and Mrs Mossie and take you to Mountain Sanctuary Park for the day.

I have 2 friends whose life lists are standing on 793 and 789 respectively. Talk about expensive! They went on a 2 week trip to Northern cape for 8 lifers, and then a 5 day weekend to Caprivi, for another 4! It works out at about R5000 per lifer. They have also been down to the cape twice last year by plane, to see the Macaroni Penguin and Citrine wagtail, and MISSED BOTH! Now that's expensive!
Luckily we can still pick up lifers relatively cheaply, we're on 529 and 527, and have fun in the process.
Good luck, happy birding!
