Today, I finally managed a day off varsity and got to join a friend to go to a farm on the way to Kenton, he was there to teach the staff to fire a weapon and I thought it was a prime chance at adding some birds to my Eastern Cape list. :

I managed a good 68 species in under 3 hours(many of them new for my E.C list), with 27 others that were heard and not seen (The Eastern Cape thickets make it very hard to approach singing bushes )

Some of the bird highlights,

Greater Double Collared Sunbird
Southern Double COllared Sunbird
Collared Sunbird
Cape Batis
Olive Woodpecker(Second Sighting ever)
Blue-mantled Crested Flycatcher
Crowned Eagle
Knysna Turaco
Forest Weaver
Little Rush Warbler
Black Sawwing
Rednecked Spurfowl

AND,

The 2 lifers for the day

Barrow's Korhaan
Booted Eagle (Pale and Dark phase)

and possibly my best sighting, a Giant Eagle Owl Not something easily found in the Eastern Cape.

Other Sightings: Blesbok(Normal and White Morph), Mountain Reedbuck, Kudu, Nyala, Bushbuck, Eland, Warthog, Impala, Water Monitor and Leopard Tortoise and a Blue Duiker Skull(Something I'd love to see alive in the wild) :D

I agree, Justin, blessed are the public holidays for they shall produce lifers!

Sounds like a great trip there and what fantastic sightings. I had similar luck on Heritage Day. Duncan and his fater (Bruce) invited me to join them on a trip to Northern Farm in the afternoon, a place I had never been before. They were atlassing and ended the day on 59 species and for me personally, I came away with 11 lifers. Sadly we dipped on the Marsh Owls, though we did see three birds that looked like they were owls but in the late evening gloom (it was already after 6pm) we couldn't get a positive ID.

There was a downside to it though. We came across two very young (maybe 6-8 weeks old) black backed jackals that seemed to have been born with some sort of genetic defect. At first glance it looked like their front legs were broken as they were having real trouble walking, but then we came to the conclusion that it would be very unlikely they had both suffered identical injuries. We thought about taking them to an animal rescue centre but then decided that if it was a birth defect rather than an injury it was unlikely they could be helped, so we just had to leave them and let nature take its course. It was heartbreaking but I know it's really best not to interfere with nature.

Justin, lets make a deal: let me know where you saw the Barrow's and I'll show you plenty of Blue Duikers! The korhaan is fast becoming a boggy bird of mine, I just can't seem to find the bird after going to all the "you'll definitely see it here" places.

The duikers are seriously common in the Nahoon Estuary Nature Reserve in East London, I've never made a note of it but I can honestly say I see at least one EVERY time I go there.

Hi Jeff :D

I would gladly swop lifers........There are a few places around here where the Barrow's are supposedly seen..I was just lucky to be at the right place at the right time, not expecting to find the habitat on this farm at all :D I'll speak to some of the birders here in Grahamstown and see if they know of accessable places to find them, and then let you know.

Jeff, if you are willing to come up to Gauteng, I can almost guarantee you a Barrow's Korhaan. Saw a male and female on Saturday.

Here are some proof shots of the birds.

Thanks Rusty, pity I don't see you creeping around elsewhere anymore. I've left quite a few messages for you. Thought you were ignoring me.

I wish I could see it in Rietvlei NR, everyone else but me seems to see it there.

Haha.......Been far to busy at varsity to creep anywhere really Can't remeber the last time I posted on SANparks, and even longer on the Trekkies forum. This one is just easier to keep up with, as posts don't come through as often! :D

Seems people here, WORK!

Where did you see it then?! I've never been to Rietvlei, but hopefully I'll get around there and a few other places I havent been (Northern Farm, Marievale, Suikerbosrand, Barakolalo etc etc) when im home in Dec.

Wildtuinman, were the pics of the Barrows taken at Rietvlei? Which part of the reserve? We were there on Monday morning but found a large part of the reserve freshly burned, and couldn't find the Barrows. We did manage Redwinged Francolin, but I would love to see Barrows. I can see it's a "kliprandjie", but can't quite make out where it was taken.

mmm, I seem to have heard this all before..... Ha ha ha, thanks for the invite but I'll keep on trying locally -- surely I have to find one EVENTUALLY

I quite enjoy the "chase" if you can call it that -- doing the research, chatting to other birders and doing lots of searching. It took about 17 years to find my first Finfoot (by which stage it had mythical status) but now I've found more places with suitable habitat and see it regularly in the East London area.

There's a Barrow's Korhaan out there with my name on
