Having been studying here at Rhodes University, I have managed to pick up a number of lifers as I never have really been this end of the world before......There was however one bird I really wanted to see while studying here, and It has been the one bird I have not been able to find......I have gone countless times to the Botanical Gardens, with no such luck (Not even a call) :D I also spent some time asking Andrian Craig where to look out for them, and found out they quite sporadic visitors to Grahamstown.

Today, I wrote a Zoology test at 7:30 this morning, on nothing but 2 hours sleep On the way back to res, I heard the call I've spent many times on Robert's listening to.....and there he was, an OLIVE WOODPECKER busy entering a nest hole just next to the path back home!

The problem now, is that my camera (40D) refuses to turn on.... So until I get that seen to, the somewhat 'photographic' memory is all I have! :D

At least you saw the bird, that has to be some consolation. I felt the same way with that Golden Tailed Woodpecker at WSBG the other day because I had thought about taking the video camera with me but changed my mind at the last minute. So I get into WSBG and within minutes I'm watching a Golden Tailed Woodpecker excavating a nest hole and really wishing I had the video camera as still shots don't really capture the spectacle of his head going back and forth and the sound of the tapping. Let's hope he's there again this afternoon when I go back.

BTW, forgive my ignorance (I'm a Brit you know!) but where is Rhodes University?

Cheers Justin.

The Eastern Cape is one area I've still to visit in SA, as well as Kwazulu Natal. Maybe one day, when the lotto machine picks out the right numbers...
