We've lived in this house almost four years now and it's easy to think we're not going to get any more lifers around here. Wrong! This morning we kept getting glimpses of a bird that we thought was a Common Fiscal but it kept flying off before we could get the binoculars on it. Then I finally found it resting on the lower section of one of the pylons in the vlei and it turned out to be a Lesser Grey Shrike. It stayed long enough for me to get a few shots with Mariana's camera, which I was quite pleased about. The first one's not great because I took it from the doorstep, probably at least 30m away from the bird. The second one is better as it stayed long enough for me to walk down to the security fence between us and the vlei. What a pleasant surprise for a Sunday morning!

Nice bird to get in the area and a lifer too, well done! <!-- s:spin: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/spin.gif" alt=":spin:" title="Spinning" /><!-- s:spin: -->

Thanks Gordon.

I didn't realise how unusual it was for this area until I read "Absent from most of the Highveld" in one of my books (or maybe on Roberts MM, can't remember). Given the time of year I suppose it was just passing through on its northward migration, probably just stopped for a snack. That vlei is teeming with insects and the Common Fiscals are there every day stuffing their faces, so it would be an ideal choice for a quick meal.

I guess I'm just being greedy but I was really hoping it would come and land in our garden as it would be fantastic to have it on our garden list!
