Well it was back in the bakkie, that's where. I had arrived at the mountain with it still shrouded in mist, a typically tropical rainy season morning after overnight rain. The rainforest was dripping, underfoot squelchy and the mist was more of a steady drizzle. So I embarked on my 10-12km hike without the trusty Canon not wanting to get it wet. I have a "waterproof" camera bag but until it has been tried and tested in one of Guinea's downpours it cannot be considered truly waterproof, and I didn't want today to be the day for testing it. Anyway, my decision was to be vindicated later as I didn't quite make it back to the bakkie before getting thoroughly soaked.

Two hours into my hike conditions had improved and the sun was even trying to break through, it only managed that though much later after the downpour. Anyway, a large shadow passed over me and I looked up to see a large raptor that I knew instantly from all that poring over the field guides was one of those "bucket list" lifers. Bittersweet though in that the bird turned around and circled over us a dozen or so times at no more than 30m up before moving off - and I didn't have the camera The object of much drooling and none too repeatable mutterings was an adult PALM-NUT VULTURE :D

The day was rounded off on the way back to base when a giant black (save for the top of the head and tip of the tail) hornbill swooped across the forest track from canopy to canopy, disappearing almost immediately. However, that very basic description was enough to tick off another lifer in the 80cm White-crested Hornbill :D .

He he, that is just such a typical situation...

You are definitely going to have to test out that waterproof bag!
