So, the highlight of my day so far, was dropping my daughter off at playschool this morning, and together witnessing a little sparrowhawk circling around, and then dive-bombing some pigeons who were sitting on the roof. The pigeons just managed to avoid being breakfast the LSH then went off to find another half asleep flying vermin to assassinate. Interestingly, it seems that the LSH's tack tick is to try nail the stationary birds, as it showed no interest in the flying birds, despite being in close proximity to them...unlike the falcons which are mush faster on the wing. Its quite sad when the parent gets more excited than the kids about these things. I think my daughter is at that age where everything is new and wondrous, including watching raptors catching breakfast on the wing! I reported this to the headmistress of the school, who said that the piles of pigeon feathers that she keeps finding on the school grounds are quite upsetting to the grade 0's

I guess the other interesting thing, is that LSH is generally regarded as a species that hunts smaller prey. So the attack of this bird on pigeon which is almost equal in size and weight is quite amazing.
