I enjoyed a late morning visit to Intaka Island in Century City today. The weather was good after the showers we had during the week, but the occasional patch of cloud did cover the sun for a few minutes.

Purple Heron flew across the first pond just as we arrived. A great way to start the outing.

There were plenty of Egyptian Geese flying overhead and resting on the edges of the ponds. A pair of Spurwing Geese also made a flyover, but I didn't manage to get a photo.

The Coots were quite active, building nests and chasing each other.

A Sacred and Glossy Ibis were foraging together and I was lucky to get them both in the shot as they flew off.

We thought this was a leucistic heron, but zooming in shows that it's definitely a statue :( . There's even some algae on the bottom of it :) .

This Black-crowned Night -heron was the only one we saw on this outing as it fled from the thick vegetation at the edge of the pond.

There weren't many Dabchicks around, so this one's cute antics kept us occupied for a while.

We didn't see any Snipes at their "usual" (I've only seen them there once) hide, but we did get a pair of Purple Swamphen.

The Coots dished out plenty of these looks to birders and fellow Coots. They didn't chase any of the birders though.

The artificial heronries were full of White-breasted and Reed Cormorants as well as Black-headed and Grey Herons. They were constantly flying off in search of twigs,

This lone Southern Masked Weaver didn't realise that I was taking its picture through the wall of the hide.

This image shows some of the frustration of action shots. I was trying to get a Coot high speed chase, but missed the timing. you can just make out the Coot's red knob in the left splash.

This one looked like it was using an outboard motor :D

After seeing this cat skulking in the bushes, we started to find cat footprints all over the place. Plenty of winged food around i guess <!-- s:evil: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_evil.gif" alt="" title="Evil or Very Mad" /><!-- s:evil: --> .

The outing ended with a family of Cape Shovellors.

Hi Camby

I was also their last week and got the same bird shots as you. :D I missed the cat though.

I also got a pic of the Klaas Cuckoo near the nursery.

Please report all cats to the guides, try and take them to the spot and show them where the cats are. We have been trying to trap the cats, and got down to just one or two last year, now they are increasing again, and we need to trap and sterilize before it gets out of hand.

I suppose they cross the bridge at night and move in, but this is only since all the housing was developed - it must be stopped before we end with a mini Robben Island.

Nice to see that Klaas's was found - you do both report all interesting sightings to the guides and write them down in their sightings book?

Hi Margaret
I will surely keep an eye out for the cats.

I handed a photo of the Cuckoo to the guides after they told me that the Klaas Cuckoo was a rare visitor to the site.
