nkgray created the topic: Guinea - day 18
18 days now in Guinea and my tally continues to grow. The Guinea list now stands at 64 species (list below) with 21 of these being species not found in Southern Africa.

The 3 West African species added since my last post have been Red-chested Swallow, Stone Partridge and Marsh Tchagra. The swallows are a daily sight in the field camp, with two juveniles usually perching quite conspicuously on a power cable or a radio mast within 15m of my room, and calling and waiting for mother to feed them ..... so close that I decided to try and get a picture of one of the juveniles (pink throat not rufous) with the pocket Nikon Coolpix that I have with me. I had forgotten how awful the images from pocket digitals are when you need detail, but I think this one is just about good enough to at least show you one West African species. This one is essentially limited to Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, Gambia, Sierra Leone and parts of Mali, Ivory Coast and Burkina Fasso, with much smaller and localised populations along the Congo River and in the Ethiopian Highlands. (P.S. 2nd June - I see the French name is "Hirondelle de Guineé" - Guinea Swallow)

Below another shot of the environment in which I am working.

P.S. Make it 65 species! After posting this I had a female Red-billed Firefinch literally fly into my room through the open door, do a couple of circuits, perch on top of the wardrobe and fly out again.

Just amazing Neil. What is the reason for not taking your camera.? Is it due to the terrain or theft ?

Great stuff, Neil, and nice to see a species we'll never see here, no matter what camera it was photographed with.

Thanks, Guys.

Philip, the answer to not having the Canon with me is twofold. Firstly, this was the first trip of hopefully several over the next year and as Guinea is entering its very tropical rainy season in one the places I'll be visiting I wasn't so sure that bringing the camera would be a good idea. Secondly, as it is a first trip I thought I'd just check out the situation in respect of arriving at the airport with camera equipment, crime in the country, etc. All potential fears and worries have been allayed so I will definitely have the Canon here next trip. If nothing else I would hope to get a much better pic of the Red-chested Swallow.

5 more added today, with Western Bluebill as another lifer, and I had to come all the way to Guinea to get my second ever sighting of Dwarf Bittern!

The landscapes that you have been posting from Guinea are fantastic. Very envious! Looking forward to the photos when you take your proper camera(s) with.
