Well, I've changed location again. Now in the small town of Kerouane, some 180km north of N'Zerekore. At the N'Zerekore airfield this morning I added Bates's Swift to my West Africa list. We flew to Gbenko airfield, 41km by road from Kerouane. Sounds close but it took 2 hours and 5 minutes to drive, and the rains haven't started properly yet :rolleyes: Two pics from that drive below, taken from the same spot looking downhill and uphill. Just after this spot I was treated to the birding moment of the trip so far - a Violet Turaco swooping across the road. There is apparently an escapee somewhere in Johannesburg at the moment, but to see this giant purple turaco with red underwings, red crest and yellow frontal shield, in its natural environment is quite a sight :D

Well, Neil, you certainly get my vote as this year's luckiest man on the forum! I know you're there working, not on a birding trip, but what a fantastic opportunity to get birds on your list that most of us could only dream of. I work mostly from home so very little chance of any exotic lifers for me during my working day!

Keep the reports coming.

Dave,

I consider myself fortunate to have a job that has me out in the bush most of the time. In the last 15 months between Zambia, the DRC and now Guinea I have added something like 40 species that are not found south of the Zambezi.

Right now at the end of Day 10 my Guinea species list stands at 45 (mostly sightings with the naked eye - the pocket Tascos haven't been too much use yet), with 15 of these non-Southern African species - having today added Lesser Blue-eared Starling and Double-spurred Spurfowl.

Fascinating countryside. Would you like to swap jobs? <!-- s:spin: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/spin.gif" alt=":spin:" title="Spinning" /><!-- s:spin: -->
