Hi,
I drove to Centurion from Sandton this morning on urgent business
this morning, stopped on the south side of the lake, and had a good view of the gull. There were quite a few people on the northern bank with long lenses, who may have some explaining to do about sudden urgent business too. (A lifer for me) Thanks to the people who posted the sighting.
Amanda.

Agggggrrrr, I had four interviews today, so could not slip away for the urgent business, so only one of the four people pitched (maybe they were in Ceturion trying to see the Gull)

Where is the best spot to view the bird from? I will only be able to get there on Saturday, hope it is still around.

Cheers,
Justin

Justin it moves around a lot. Almost got a heart attack today when my friend spotted it before me and said "oh, now he's flying away". Just scan through all the grey-headed gulls until you see one with a black head (good luck with that). Or if you're lucky there will already be some other birders there who spotted it.

Seeing a big lifer like this at Centurion Lake of all places almost seems like cheating. Still ticking it though...

The bird was still around at lunch time today. Initially on the concrete support structure for the musical fountain in the lake. About two o clock it flew off to the discharge end of the dam and was swimming with other grey headed gulls when I last saw it. Yesterday and on Wednesday it apparently left at about 16h30. Best viewing is on the Northern side of the dam.

Just a word of warning, I will be at the maal just after 13:00 to try and see the bird, if you are wanting to sse it, please ensure taht you are there before that time as it will more than likely fly off just prior to my arrival

He he, took your advice and got there at 6:30... the star of the show finally arrived at 8:10 and was still there when I left at 11:00

The best place to view the bird is from the park on the opposite side, just walk across the red pedestrian bridge and look for all the birders... :-)

WOW! That was one of the easiest lifers ever, feels like cheating it was so easy. My first ever rare bird! Thanks for those who located him!
