Hi

All sorts of weird things seem to appear in my mother-in-laws garden in the middle of Athol, Johannesburg. In addition to a prolific breeding pair of thick-knees, occasional wattled plovers, the odd visitation from a crimson breasted shrike, a mandarin duck, to name a few. Yesterday evening, I saw and heard a Freckled Nightjar flying around the house and garden!!

Anybody else seen this bird in JHB??

Mossie,

I think the closest I ever recall hearing them would be in the hills around Nylstroom.

Yes, it must be that secret underground pipeline of bushveld birds that runs between Nylstroom and my in-laws house! That would explain the odd appearance of the crimson breasted shrike

Talking of which, I had previously seen them as far south as Midrand (Christmas day!), my wife thinks it was a southern boubou dressed up as santa claus, but I'm sure I hadn't had that much to drink

I think we are probably in for quite a few more suprises in JHB over the next few years, with the JHB microclimate changing, and the number of bushveld trees that are being planted around the city.

Hi,
We used to live in Faerie Glen, near the Nature Reserve, and regularly had Freckled Nightjars around our area, hunting from our roof at night. There was a vacant piece of land next to us, with lots of mice and insects. There was also a family of Spotted Eagle Owls that made use of this area for hunting for their supper. As for the Father Christmas bird, that is indeed something I would give my eye teeth to see in a suburban garden in Jhb.
Regards,
Amanda
