This winter we have seen a lot fewer sunbirds in our Johannesburg garden than usual, so the untapped source of nectar has led to a some interesting opportunists taking advantage of this abundant food source, including bulbuls, weavers, white eyes and the like. By far the most interesting visitors to the aloes and knophias have been this family group of green wood hoopoes, who are now visiting on an almost daily basis. Not quite the speed and elegance of sunbirds, but equally fun to watch. I have never seen this species drinking nectar before, although it has previously been published in Roberts VII. It had me wondering whether they were in anyway related to sunbirds, or whether the apparent resemblance is purely superficial, and is more a case of convergent evolution? Oh well, they made my weekend, which would have been depressingly quite birdless.

Perhaps they are sunbirds on steroids? Great to have them in the garden with their noisy antics. :) We love to watch them teasing the cat.

You got my hopes up all for nothing. I thought I was finally going to be able to make an idea of a bird and then........ <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt="" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: -->

Am green with envy that you have them as garden visitors!
