Just back from a few days in our DRC field camp, which is now almost complete. Can't wait till we get into full swing in the next month, the place is swarming with birds :D

Lot's of calls I don't recognise and a couple of species I haven't seen before (from fleeting glances without binos) - some of the many bulbul and starling species in the area. Sat at the campfire late on Wednesday evening to the call of Fiery-necked Nightjars (which I regard as the night-time equivalent of the Fish-Eagle as being THE hallmark sound of the African night) . We have some ever-present African Paradise-Flycatchers in the large canopy trees alongside the camp and Groundscraper Thrush, Black-crowned Tchagra and Black-headed Oriole are the only members of the dawn chorus that I can recognise.

We are close to a large lake and I watched a juvenile African Fish-Eagle raiding the nest of a very plucky Yellow-billed Egret that tried to ward it off - to no avail, the young Fish-Eagle devoured the contents of the nest - too far off to see properly but it looked like a nestling not an egg.

So it looks like I'll have some interesting post-dawn birding ahead as I travel here more regularly later in the year. Watch this space

If you happen to require any Software Development on site, I would happily volunteer...
