Doug created the topic: Mafika Lisu pass - Lesotho
The family and I headed down to Paul Roux for the long weekend with the idea of going
into Lesotho.

We got up early on Saturday morning and headed into Lesotho via Ficksburg.
As we headed into the mountains we thought me might be lucky enough to see snow.

I must say that Mafika Lisu pass is my favorite part of the world by far and as we headed
up we soon saw that snow would abound. The climb up the pass rivals that of Sani Pass except
for the fact that it is tarred. The dramatic drop off from the top is nothing short of spectacular.

As we headed up we knew we were in for a tough drive. The last climb was so steep my Tazz could not get out of first gear.

Despite the climb, we soon realised that it was worth every bit of the effort to make the top.....

Snow got increasingly thick and by the top, the water that normally runs down the mountain had frozen solid in dramatic ice falls....

The top had even more surprises. It still had the spot height telling you just how high above sea level you were,

But it has now been proclaimed a nature reserve....

With the most awesome resturaunt righto n the edge of a VERY TALL CLIFF!!!

And being a nature reserve it was not short of quality birds to photograph...

Lanner Falcon

Sentinel Rock-thrush

And finally the drive down reminded us just how amazing this pass truly is.

And finally a few more from in and around the house.

Red-throated Wryneck

White-browed Sparrow-weaver

Karoo Scrub-robin

And add to that African Harrier-hawk in the garden of our cottage - what a weekend!!!

Cheers,
Doug.

Spectacular scenery! Is that the pass that heads up to the Katse Dam?

Hi Justin.

What the picture doesn't show of the fleecy tracksuit pants under the jeans, T-shirt, polarneck and polar fleece jacket, two pairs of socks, one of which was thick thermal socks and the thinsulate thermal gloves I took of just for that photo. As you see me there I was actually starting to get a little hot as I was overdressed.....
