I set out to Marievale on Sunday morning with the intention of finding African Rail. Two of our party of four had never seen the bird before. After much searching we were finally rewarded with very special views of both the Rail and a couple of Black Crake foraging in the relative open.

Not only did we manage to get the above birds but we also got fantastic views of 3 Otter swimming past the hide as well as a Water Mongoose walking along one of the boundary fences. I suspect all these excellent views were afforded by the bitterly cold weather, with the temperature remaining between 0 and 3 degrees Celsius the entire morning.

We finished the day off by taking a drive through the hills at the back of Nigel, managing to get this Redcapped Lark near the top as well as a White Browed Sparrow Weaver near one of the farms on the South side of the hills.

Cheers,
Gordon
