Charles created the topic: Mapungubwe excellent!
I went to Mapungubwe National Park last week.
As a result of good rainfall the birdlife was amazing. The Maloutswa hide produced very noisy Lesser Moorhen (about 7 pairs). One pair not shy, swimming not 2 meters from me had 6 small chicks which they constantly attended to!)
Comb Duck bred in a hollow in one of the the Fever trees (Acacia xantophloea).Other good sightings were a pair of African Pygmy-geese,Greater Painted Snipe, Allen’s Gallinule, Dwarf Bittern, White-backed Night-heron and Greyheaded Kingfisher.
The plains surrounding the hide are covered with Tribulus spp(Duwweltjies)and abounded with Harlequin Quails (calling, venturing onto the road and flushing as you drove past).Masses of White and Marabou Storks were also present. In the rank grassland I saw Corn Crake venturing onto the road on 2 occasions.
The Den Straat Road at night produced 4 separate Three-banded Courser sightings,Bronze-winged Coursers, a Verreaux’s Eagle-owl and European Nightjar
On the Eastern side I saw Fawn-coloured Lark and this side had an enormous amount of calling Monotonous Larks.
The Treetop walk was also productive and I saw Broad-billed Rollers nesting and Senegal Coucal.
I would advise any birder who would like to see any of the above birds to pay a visit to Mapungubwe as soon as possible. The birds were very easy to see and the scenery at the moment is spectacular. A 4x4 is preferable as the roads are very wet and muddy and I got stuck (but got myself out again!)near the Cattle Grid close to Mazhou camping site.
I would like to thank Dewald Swanepoel for his report and guidance on good locations for certain birds(especially for the Three-banded Courser!)
Regards
Charles Vermeulen

Hi Charles, great pictures from what was obviously a fantastic birding trip!

I am very jealous of the quail sightings... <!-- s8) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cool.gif" alt="8)" title="Cool" /><!-- s8) -->

I am so jealous of the whole trip.... I would give my eye-teeth to go there now. If anyone is going and needs a chief cook and bottle-washer to tag along... please take me....
