Hi All,

Yesterday afternoon I heard my first Piet-my-Vrou of the summer at Emmarentia Dam in JHB. (14 Oct)

Anyone else seen or heard it this summer yet?

Cheers

I heard one on Saturday, October 2nd by the Vaal River in Parys and someone (I think it was Jacques P) photographed one at WSBG the day before, the pic is on here somewhere. Aren't cuckoos normally associated with spring? Here at Shedley Towers we regard the first day of summer as the day we see the first European Bee Eater on the powerlines outside our house. Last year it was either the 1st or 2nd of November so maybe they'll be here soon. :D

P.S. My apologies, it was Jan. Here's the post:

Hi I had my first cuckoos of the season today at WSBG. I managed to see Red-chested, Diderick and Klaas's(mind you I have seen overwintering Klaas's there in each of the last 3 winters). I saw my first Euro Bee-eaters for the summer on the west coast this past weekend. Summer is here for sure.

Regards Duncan

Where did you see the Klaas's? I've only ever heard it there, on the path by the river that leads to the hide, never managed to see it. Come to think of it, Red Chested and Diderick are the only two I've seen at WSBG, though I've heard both Klaas's and Black many times. I think it's time I joined you there again, let's hope it's not raining next Friday!

Hi Dave,

There is a Klass's Cuckoo that overwinters in the Gardens every year, seems to hang around the large trees by the restuarant! There should be quite a few more in the gardens by now, so your chances of seeing one are quite high! Best of Luck! I cant wait to return to Jhb this December, maybe I'll see you in the Garens too, as I still nee to see the black cuckoo, Acacia Pied Barbet and half-collared Kingfisher for my Gauteng and WSBG list!

Cheers,

Justin

Me too (well, got Black Cuckoo in Gauteng, just not at WSBG) so let me know when you get back to Jozi and we'll arrange something. Maybe Duncan can act as our unpaid guide! <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt="" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: -->

I got Red-chested Cukoo on 08/10/2010 together with Black Cuckoo, Diederick Cuckoo and Klaas' Cuckoo.

Heard my first Diederick Cuckoo on 04/09/2010.
