Botswana / Namibia birding trip. (30/10/2007 to 20/11/2007)

Hi everyone. I am safely back from my birding trip. The trip was really fantastic and we saw some nice quality birds. Botswana and Namibia were Hottttttttt … not being used to it I spend all my Pulas and Namibia dollars on water and cool drinks ect.

For those of you who know Botswana we started in Prins Albert. We then traveled to Kimberley. From Kimberley we traveled to Botsalano game reserve. We then crossed the border and traveled via Lobatsi.. Gaberone .. Palapye and to the Khama Rhino Reserve just outside Serowe. Here we had one of the worst thunderstorms (lightning) I have ever experienced. (In my tent) Our next stop was Maun. I was a bit disappointed in Maun. I expected more seeing that it is so close to the delta. We then moved on to Drotskey Cabins on the banks of the Kavango river. I really enjoyed Drotskey .. The camping site and birding was great. The boat trip was spectacular and we saw some quality birds. We then crossed the border into Namibia to Ngepi camp. We then traveled via the Caprivi to Katima Mulino to Kalizo lodge. I really enjoyed the birding here. The Carmine bee-eaters breeding on the banks of the Zambezi River blew my mind. Seeing thousands of these beautiful birds is really spectacular. We then traveled to Kasane .. then to Francis town .. across the border to Kimberley and back home.

We traveled 6900 km . We saw 377 species on the trip. Lifers on the trip .

African Cuckoo, Cutthroat Finch, Arnot’s Chat, Wood Owl, Bradfields Hornbill, Spectacled Weaver, Brownthroated Weaver, Brown Firefinch, Dickinson’s Kestrel, Pygmy Goose, Dwarf Bittern, Sand Marten, Barred Owl, Yellowbilled Oxpecker, Yellowfronted Tinker Barbet, Striped Cuckoo, Whitebrowed Coucal, Burchells Sandgrouse, Coppery-tailed Coucal, Lesser Moorhen, Shortclawed Lark, Wattled Crane, Luapula Cisticola, Swamp Boubou, Hooded Vulture, Ovambo Sparrowhawk, Collared Palmthrush, Pinkbilled lark, Chirping Cisticola, Purplebanded Sunbird, Giant Eagle Owl, Redbilled Francolin, Carmine Bee-eater, Greater Swamp Warbler,
Red-headed Finch, Red-necked Falcon, Rufousbellied Heron, Red-winged Pratincole,
Ictorine Warbler, Swallow-tailed Bee-eater, Shelley’s Sunbird, African Skimmer, Rock Pratincole, Northern Grey-headed Sparrow, White-headed Vulture, Hartlaubs Babbler, Gabar Goshawk, White-backed Night Heron, Longtoed Plover and White-faced Owl.

    Cheers

    Philip

Philip,

Makes me get twitchy (appropriate word I think). Would have been 11 lifers on your list for me too.

Like the loo shot. It reminds me of a trip to Fothergill Island on Lake Kariba years back. Take the binos with you and you can do some birding sitting on the loo!

Philip,

Sounds like you had an amazing trip. I seriously need to make a plan to visit the region. Anyone willing to sponsor me? <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt="" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: -->
