I headed down to Marievale early morning, Dec 22nd. Arriving I quickly setup my recording equipment and got down work. Soon I got some very nice recordings of African Marsh Warbler, although the machinery in the mine did interfere a little.

As the morning progresed, the wind picked up a bit so I headed into the main reserve where the road was suitable for recording based on wind direction. Very soon I got excellent recordings of Levaillant's Cisticola and by the end of the morning I had collected all thre calls, the usual call one normally hears, the call given as one male chases another out of his territory, and the alarm call.

Walking further along, I heard a Yellowbilled duck calling at the main causeway and pointed it at the duck. As I did so, it stopped calling, only to be replaced by a Red-chested Flufftail whish was awesome to record.

I took a walk along the boundary fence and this is when the new setup came into its own. With my older setup, soft, high pitched calls like Little Stint were impossible to record. This time I got some very nice recordings, together with Greater Flamingo, Fulvous Duck, more african Reed Warbler, Common Moorhen and Wood Sandpiper.

Overall a very succesfull mornings recording inspite of the wind. Gordon has often said "Put a sock in it!" and he was right. A sock makes a very good windshield. Much more effective that R400 for an "accoustically transparent Windshield" from the local AKG agents.

I have a certain memory of shocked birders listening to your recordings after making amused and rather rude comments about your well used sock...

And the obvious red-chested flufftail on the tape that was not audible to the ordinary ear <!-- s8) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cool.gif" alt="8)" title="Cool" /><!-- s8) -->
The moral of the story... Never mock a man with a well used sock!
The question is, would a new sock work just as well? Surely the holes let in more high frequency sounds so an old sock is better.
