Doug created the topic: Late leavers!
Hi all.

I have had and still have a Fairy Flycatcher in my garden in Craighall Park this winter. What makes it particularly interesting is that the bird is still around and has even started giving its full display call as heard on Roberts Multimedia birds. I have seen them around and heard basic contact calls but have not heard it go full out with a breeding call.

Is this rather late for Fairy Flycatcher to still be here in Gauteng and more importantly does the fact that it is giving the full display call mean it has decided to stay here and try and breed (presuming it can find a mate)?

What was nice though is that it was so close I was able to get a top quality recording of its call even though I was recording it during morning rush hour traffic which normally kills all recordings.

Cheers,
Doug.

Hi Doug,
Aren't these among the most beautiful of birds? If I read the Atlas (SABAP1) correctly, it seems as even though these birds are virtually absent, or seem that way, from the old Transvaal in summer, a few individuals remain.

Hi Dewald.

Yes they are absent in summer. That is why I was questioning the amorous nature of this particular male! <!-- s:oops: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_redface.gif" alt="" title="Embarassed" /><!-- s:oops: -->
