I am in my 18th year of living in Atlasville and less than 10 minutes ago I have just seen the first Chestnut-vented Titbabbler in my garden in all that time - and hopping around inside our potted ornamental Cupressus! I was sitting working in my study when the bird's call alerted me - I know the call well from my frequent visits to the Hotazel area.

Surpisingly too, it is also my first Gauteng record!

Is this yet another sign that that last summer's drought coupled with this winter's cold is having a dramatic effect on our birdlife?

For the first time in several years (say at least 9 - unfortunately I have no precise record) I've spotted Wattled Starlings in our garden again.
When we came to Aliwal North 15yrs ago they were a regular sight for the first few years - disappeared completely and now pops out to drink and bath in the birdbath again.
