Yesterday a popped into to Delta to get a bit of quick birding in before the sun set. The dam is now totally free of water Hyacinth and the Yellow-billed and African Black Ducks are quite appreciative of the fact.

I was also lucky enough to get a good sighting of one of the two African Harrier Hawks which seem to frequent the park. It was perched in one of the large trees opposite the hide at the top dam. The glossy starlings where constantly mobbing it and occasionally he would fly a few metres to another perch for momentary relief, but it was short lived as the starlings again started to dive bomb him (or her). I have heard that there is a breeding pair at Parkview Golf Course but this is my first sighting at Delta.

At the hide I also saw the Broad-billed Weavers making preparations to get their nests constructed as well as a Tawny-flanked Prinia. The Common Moorhens were also about.

At the risk of totally discrediting my report above, I must mention that whilst observing the Yellow-billed Ducks at the top hide I caught a glimpse of what I can only describe as a mammal larger than a dassie that had clearly been in the water. It was a very brief sighting and my first thoughts were otter! Could this be a possibility? Well it certainly will add a little more suspense when I go to Delta next for a little after work birding therapy.

Cheers, Grant

Excellent shots of the AHH, more than a tad envious here. <!-- s:yes: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/yes.gif" alt=":yes:" title="Yes" /><!-- s:yes: -->
