Hi all,

I photographed this lizard sunning itself on a rock near the summit of the drive at Suikerbosrand. Does anyone know what species it is?

Is the tail normally short and stubby like this?

Cheers,
Gordon

Hi gordon,

either there is something wrong with my computer, or there is no photo on the post! is there no way to make the uploading of photos more user friendly? i have wanted to load a few, and eventually gave up.

Hi Jon,

The images are hosted on another server run by Imageshack. Basically they are a free hosting service. If their service is down for some reason then the pics will not appear, this seems to be the case at the moment because if I follow the URL to the image I get a "connection to server problem" message...

We looked into hosting pictures on our local hosting service, however the costs involved in getting larger disk space increase exponentially for every MB in size that gets used. Basically put local services are around 10 000 times more expensive than overseas. The drawback of hosting overseas is that the packets of data then have to travel over the general link into SA (being either JINX, CINX or SAIX), this means much slower response times, which means you will have to wait longer for each page to download, which means you will have to fork out more for your internet connection to surf your favourite site... :-)
Should we become rich and shamless, then we will enable the picture hosting facility but for the time being it will have to stay as is...

If you can give me an idea as to the process you follow when trying to upload your images, I can try and figure out where it is going wrong.

Cheers,
Gordon

Hi Gordon,

some of the posts contain the images that they should when i open them, and some dont. some contain little "x"s where the photo should be, and some have nothing at all. if you right click the x, it gives you an option to "show picture". this yields nothing however. if i am the only person having a problem, then it could be me, so dont worry! thanks for an otherwise great website.

Thanks Jon,

I am sorry you are having a problem.

Generally the x means the link to the picture has broken or is not available.

If you surf the internet through a firewall (at work for example), you might find the IT policy is to block certain sites. These often include image hosting sites, simply because a company would not want their staff uploading thousands of images.

I suspect though that imageshack may be down at the moment as I am also not able to connect to them (maybe we are both on the same network?)

Cheers,
Gordon

Hi Gordon,

You must be correct with the Imageshack server being down as I could not see the images yesterday and can see them this morning...

Sorry I cannot help with the Lizard... the tail is rather interesting though.

Regards,
Abe

The tail looks like it is probably in the process of re-growing. Probably got pulled off by something trying to eat it :)
