Hi Batmad,

They tend to prefer wooded habitats so Northern Gauteng is your best bet. They have been seen a few times along the Zaagkuilsdrift Road (North West), so I would try a little further South around the Tswaing Crater and on the other side of the N1 Freeway.

Cheers,
Gordon

If you go to Kloofendal Nature Reserve, Roodepoort first thing in the morning, your chances are good of finding the BW Courser along the track that leads from the entrance gate towards the dam. However if anybody gets there before you they disturb it, and it takes cover and you won't find it again.

Saw some at Wolfhuiskraal which fits with Gordon's advise. On the roads and firebreaks after sunset. They were quite numerous. Any such roads in that vicinity will be productive when the sun is not out. Good luck

Hello "The Waldens",

The BWC does not appear on the SABAP2 checklists for pentad 2605-2750 in which Kloofendal and Roodepoort fall. If you record them in that pentad again you should really submit an incidental report or a complete checklist to get them onto the data base.

Regards,

Bruce Paterson

Hi Bruce, we atlassed it on the 25th April 2009, at about 06h45. Sue did the card, I'm waiting to hear if she received an ORF for it, or why it's not appearing on the bird list. Will keep you updated.

Later: Sue [i:14y02moz]did [/i:14y02moz]submit a card for the pentad, including the Bronzewinged Courser, but never received a confirmation, and no orf from SABAP. The card is however, shown in the records for the pentad. So it is a bit of a mystery why the courser wasn't included on the list. We'll have to try and find it again sometime soon. Thanks for pointing it out, Bruce.

Is any time of the year good for them?

I have heard of them being seen on Zaagkuil and in Rietvlei Nature reserve, so that should always be good spots to go look for them.

I drove Zaagkuil about a month ago at around 19:00 and it was as dead as a dodo! <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt="" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: --> Not a single bird. Did see some duiker though. I might take a chance at it again this coming weekend.

If you want to see Bronze-winged Courser for sure, then go on a nightdrive at Croc Bridge, Kruger.
