marktittley created the topic: Advice about visiting Wakkerstroom
I am heading off to Durban to visit my parents and we have decided to "swing by" Wakkerstroom on the way from Joburg to Durbs. We will leave Joburg at 3am, hoping to get to Wakkerstroom as the sun rises. We will then bird around Wakkerstroom until early afternoon before continuing via Newcastle to Durban. Do you have any advice for me in terms of spots that I should prioritise? I have the Birding Gauteng book so I don't need you to post a long description of all the sites available. Rather help me with some hints as to what I should prioritise given the short time that we will be spending in the area and the fact that it is winter not summer. Would you leave the hides until later in the day or should they be early morning priorities? Thanks in anticipation! Mark

Just a word of advice don't leave wakkerstroom too late in the day for Newcastle, the dirt road between Wakkerstroom and newcastles is very rough and he tar road between Volksrust and newcastle has roadworks in progress with two very long stop and gos which can cause a long delay. there are also a lot of slow moving heavy vehicles.
Birding is a bit sparse in Wakkerstroom at the moment due to the cold. We have had night temperatures of minus 9.

As mentioned on our trip, give me a call if you need any help with the area.... My grandmother lives there, so I've birded the area thouroughly in all seasons...I was also just there a week and a half ago, and the birding was productive, especially for the specials.....it is extrememly cold though!!! <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt="" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: -->
