Jeff Curnick created the topic: Lifers galore
Hi all,

I've had a great birding time lately, with 3 Lifers in the past 4 days, just had to share this with someone <!-- s:bouncy: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/bouncy.gif" alt=":bouncy:" title="Enthusiastic" /><!-- s:bouncy: --> <!-- s:bouncy: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/bouncy.gif" alt=":bouncy:" title="Enthusiastic" /><!-- s:bouncy: --> <!-- s:bouncy: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/bouncy.gif" alt=":bouncy:" title="Enthusiastic" /><!-- s:bouncy: -->

Spent this past weekend in Port Elizabeth and Saturday morning I picked up my first lifer with distant views of a Maccoa Duck (definitely need better views), closely followed by brilliant views of a Chestnut-banded Plover posing for me in the early morning sun. These two were thanks to Paul Martin who was a big help.

Then yesterday morning (22/6) I was extremely surprised to find a group of about 20 Red--headed Finches while doing some atlasing near the small village of Elliotdale in the former Transkei (pentad 3150_2830). Apart from the excitement of finding a bird I'd looked and hoped for for a long time, the finches were also my 550th bird in SA, so a great milestone for me. <!-- s8) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cool.gif" alt="8)" title="Cool" /><!-- s8) --> <!-- s8) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cool.gif" alt="8)" title="Cool" /><!-- s8) --> <!-- s8) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cool.gif" alt="8)" title="Cool" /><!-- s8) -->

Did I mention how happy I was <!-- s:?: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_question.gif" alt=":?:" title="Question" /><!-- s:?: --> <!-- s:?: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_question.gif" alt=":?:" title="Question" /><!-- s:?: --> <!-- s:!: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_exclaim.gif" alt=":!:" title="Exclamation" /><!-- s:!: --> <!-- s:!: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_exclaim.gif" alt=":!:" title="Exclamation" /><!-- s:!: --> <!-- s:!: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_exclaim.gif" alt=":!:" title="Exclamation" /><!-- s:!: --> <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: -->

Here's looking forward to the second half of the year.

Cheers,

Jeff

Nice one Jeff, quite a milestone! I'm only 311 behind you :(

You should have come to our garden two winters ago, we used to get swarms of Red Headed Finches, sometimes up to 40 individuals in our tiny garden at one time. Now we only get three or four at a time. Must have been great to see them in the wild though, I don't think we've ever seen one outside our garden.

Dave, I think your Red Headed Finches have re-located to my Fever tree in Lonehill. They started off as 2 birds nearly 3 years ago, and now there are in excess of 40 birds every day.
Congratulations Jeff, I'm still looking for the Chestnut Banded Plover, but I don't think there is much chance of finding one in Gauteng.

Ah, so that's where they went! We reckon it's because we started buying cheaper birdseed. We used to buy finch seed but the buggers went through it too quickly and it was costing us a fortune so we switched wild bird seed at R127 for 25kg. Even then, a 25kg bag still only lasts us three months at best! So please, keep the RHF's over there! <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: -->
