Hi Gordon

I'm pretty sure I saw what must be the same bird when I visited Marievale to look (unsuccessfully) for the phalarope. I ticked it as a juvenile Fiscal though. Anyone else able to comment?

Cheers

Allan

Hi Allan,

I chose Redbacked over Common Fiscal for the following reasons:
Common Fiscal juv tends to be more grey in colour than red. The Fiscal also tends to have a white wing bar which is missing on this bird.

It will be interesting to see what others think?

Cheers
Gordon

1st Winter Red-backed Shrike.
The bird can be aged thus, courtesy of the scalloping on the mantle and scaps and the pale fringing on the coverts and tertials.

Hi Gordon.

That isn't the bird I saw, or maybe it was but I don't know if the plumage would have changed that much.
The one I saw definitely had a lighter crown/nape than the rest of the body and it was starting to develop the black face mask, althoug it was not to pronounced yet.
