After visiting this park various times in search of the Black Sparrowhawk, for a photo, I finally managed to find one on Sunday 20 June 2010.

And found the Half-collared Kingfisher again too.....

I had never heard of this park until you mentioned it (and I live not far from Randburg). Both those birds would be lifers for me. After Googling it, I found it sounds very interesting but some people have expressed security concerns. Is it the sort of place you can safely walk around with cameras etc.? Obviously you took your camera there but were you alone or in a group? If it's fairly safe, I'll definitely pay it a visit sometime.

Hi Dave. I have always gone there on my own, but about a year ago, a friend who walks his dogs there every morning, asked that I'd rather not go alone anymore.
So lately my husband went with me. And yes we had camera's and bino's.
The time of day you visit is also important: from about 09h00 the park get busy with all kind of people and 'elements' but from 06h00 - 08h30 it is mostly birders and people walking their dogs who are there. I'll pm you more specific directions as to where you can find them.
Or else you could contact Niall Perrins - he is always willing to have company while walking the dogs.

Hi Yolande

Is the Black Sparrowhawk a regular resident at the park? If so please could you PM me the details on how to get there and where to find the bird. I have tried at Northern Farm to spot this bird but no luck to date.
Does anyone perhaps know if there is still a breeding pair at Kloofendaal, or has that tree also been cut down?

Many thanks
Trevor

Hi Trevor.

Regarding the Kloofendal pair - they have not been around for quite a while now. The nest is still there though.

The one at Golden Harvest has been breeding there for a while, but then sometime during last year, the Egyptian Goose harrassed and chased them off. But it seems they are back in the park. Niall have spotted the male a few weeks ago, then it seemed he left again, and now they are back, apparently at the same nest.

I will pm you the details.
