We spend 3 nights in the Karoo National Park recently. It was a very special time to be in the Karoo as some areas were covered in snow. We had enough snow near Richmond to build a snowman and to have a snowball fight.

As for birding, I picked up 5 lifers in the form of Karoo Korhaan, Namaqua Warbler, Grey Tit, African Rock Pipit and Black-eared Sparrowlark.

Some of the other noteworthy sightings were:

Southern Tchagra
Layard's Tit-Babbler
Grey-backed Cisticola
White-throated Canary
Pale-winged Starling
Karoo Long-billed Lark
Rufous-eared Warbler
Karoo Scrub-Robin
Karoo Chat
Verreaux's Eagle
Secretarybird
Blue Crane
Pririt Batis

Blue Korhaan (in the Free State)

Well done on the lifers. It is really unbelievable that you got snow. When i was there in February the temperature was in the 40 degrees. Talk about two extremes.

Unbelievable I tell you.

I was there in March and it was 40 degrees! <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: --> <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: -->

Kroonstad was -8 and when we stopped for breakfast in Bloemfontein it was -6.
Sutherland I heard had a maximum of -2.5 at 1p.m. on Tuesday. <!-- s:shocking: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/shocking.gif" alt=":shocking:" title="Shocking" /><!-- s:shocking: -->

Awesome stuff. As this is the coldest winter since 1994, "enjoy" it while it lasts. These special really cold winters with plenty of snow are rare.

Amazing!!!

And Wakkerstroom was -9 the other night with the usual crop of burst pipes! <!-- s:shocking: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/shocking.gif" alt=":shocking:" title="Shocking" /><!-- s:shocking: --> We have had our anthracite heater going day and night for the past month!
