Hi All,

I have just returned from the Eastern Cape, as university has now broken up for the holidays.
I have about 5 weeks up in Gauteng before I head back down for the second semester. I have noticed many of you forumites get out to do some birding quite regularly, which is not the case for me as I have no means of transport (yet) and dont really know many people who enjoy the hobby my age <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: --> So I thought maybe putting this message out would be a good idea?! I'm very into photography, and increasing my Gauteng Bird and Butterfly lists....there are many 'close' places I have not been eg. Delta Park, Northern Farm, Suikerbosrand, Marievale etc etc..and was wondering if any one here would like to perhaps join up for trips and do some general birding together or to chase some regional rarities?! Im quite keen to learn from the people more knowledgable of the Gauteng region, as I am certainly not.

Regards,

Justin :D

Hi Rusty.

Gordon and I are always keen to bird with forumites. PM me and we can always arrange something. Maybe go to one of those sites you have never visited?

Cheers,
Doug

Justin, you can also give me a shout. Send me a pm and we can exchange cell numbers and make it happen. I am open to including you in a trip with me (I usually bird with my adopted son who is just 5 years old and he is crazy about birding - we call him Little Birdman - my wife is always up for it when our situation allows, but my 2 teens are less than committed to birding!). I live in the Greymont area near Northcliff. I am a "photographer birder" so returning to the same spots is something I do a lot. I am sitting on 315 Lifers in Southern Africa so I am not quite your veteran birder but am mostly up to speed with the Gauteng species.

I just did the Zaagkuildrift road to Kgomo Kgomo on Saturday for the second time and loved every minute of it. I am not sure I am up for another visit there in this break, but maybe someone on this forum is heading that way! A must do for you, I think!

My availability would be during the second week of the school holidays as I am running a soccer holiday club for primary school kids from Monday to Friday next week. The Saturday or Monday or Tuesday would definitely be spent birding somewhere in Gauteng. By then I will have withdrawal symptoms. There are also one or two little spots you might consider in and around Joburg - like the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens and Kloofendal Nature Reserve on the West Rand. WS only opens at 8am and I sometimes bird Kloofendal from 6:30 and then head across to WS around opening time. In the third week I head to Durban for a family holiday/birding week and run a another holiday club in the 4th week of the break. So second week would be key.

I must admit that I have been a little disloyal to this forum and have been posting my latest trip reports around Gauteng and further afield on the Global Bird Trekkers forum. Yeah, I feel bad, guys, but it is a lot of work to post it to one forum, let alone two. Maybe I should see it it as simple as cut and pasting the code! Is that something I should be considering???

RJ:
* Friday 25th ~ Chaneng (for the Sandgrouse) and Pilanesberg - it will be a bit quieter on a weekday.
* Saturday 26th ~ Zaagkuil or Borakalalo?
* Sunday morning ~ Northern Farm
* Monday 28th ~ Suikerbosrand

Then I'm off to Kruger till the following Sunday...
