Believe it or not, New York City has a small wildlife refuge. It is right next to JFK International airport. There are some wooded areas and a couple of small ponds and marsh areas. Of course there are some beach lines next to the bay as well. There are a number of trails, but you can't always get too close to all the action. Spotting scopes and long lenses are very helpful here.

I saw around 45 species of birds there on Thursday. Didn't get too many great photographs, but I hope you find these interesting (so, I have previewed these and they work for me, I hope there are no problems this time):

Yellow Warbler

female Scarlet Tanager

American Redstart

Common Yellowthroat

Black-throated Green Warbler

Brown Thrasher

Northern Cardinal

Brown-headed Cowbird

I had to open each pic individually the first time I looked at this post but now I can see them all perfectly, strange but true <!-- s:?: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_question.gif" alt=":?:" title="Question" /><!-- s:?: --> <!-- s:!: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_exclaim.gif" alt=":!:" title="Exclamation" /><!-- s:!: --> <!-- s:?: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_question.gif" alt=":?:" title="Question" /><!-- s:?: --> <!-- s:!: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_exclaim.gif" alt=":!:" title="Exclamation" /><!-- s:!: -->

Great pics by the way, love all the bright colours of your warblers.

Yep, same problem again, no images and had to open a new tab and paste the URLs into it to see the pics. It was worth doing though, there are some great photos and it's cool to see so many non-African birds for a change!

As for the image problem, I think it may very well be smugmug blocking direct links or something. I'm pretty sure once I post this reply I'll be able to see the images until I come back to the thread later.

Great pictures!

On the blocking front, they are definitely being blocked by smugmug. Once the pictures have been opened in another window directly they are sitting in your cache. Once you close the browser and the cache clears, then you would have to re-open them in another window as a direct link.

Lot's of sites try to block images from being shown within forums as it uses up a lot of their bandwidth.

Thanks for that information NickyO! I now have it figured out. I had to go and change a setting in my gallery and now the pictures display. I wonder if its a new function as I have not encountered this before and I've posted in other forums. Now I am going to go back and check those posts to see if the same thing happened. I am happy I can continue to post on this forum!

This Friday I am heading out on a pelagic trip of the west coast of the US, San Diego. Then Tuesday I am off to Peru. I will be by myself for 6 days at a lodge in Tambopata Reserve. Hopefully I will be able to identify a good number of birds I see. There are over 1,800 birds in the guidebook. So many look alike! Then for two days near Lima I will have a guide. I should be assured of some good ID's at least!

Cheers
Brian

By the way you know that brown thrasher in your post?

The species holds the vocalization record for over 2000 different calls in ONE INDIVIDUAL BIRD!!!
