j-ms created the topic: European Cuckoo calling at Bonamanzi
We all "know" that European Cuckoos are "silent in Africa" but on two occasions in the evening over the past 4 days my wife and I heard them calling near our campsite in Bonamanzi, near Hluhluwe town. We both know the call well having heard and seen them often while birding and travelling in the UK and Europe so we are 100% sure that it is them that we heard. We have seen them a couple of times in SA but always believed that they didn't call here. Has anyone else heard them calling in Africa ?

Hi J-ms,

Doug can correct me if I am wrong but I am sure we heard one calling on a visit to Vaalkop Dam, though this was more than 15 years ago so I may be confused with another species?

Cheers,
Gordon

HI there.

Yes it was doing its "Koo-ik, Koo-ik" dipping flight call described in Roberts V.

Wonderful sighting. Was your bird doing the cuckoo clock call?

Cheers.

Hi Doug

It was doing the standard UK summertime call of "cuckoo, cuckoo, cuckoo". We never saw the bird and it only seemed to call once (but in a strophe of three) each of the two evenings we heard it.

I have heard the call "cuckoo" over the years in spring in my grandmother's garden. Never been able to see the bird though.
