Howzit!

Today I spent a couple of hours in Brooklyn near the coast while I was at my mom's (Mother's Day here in the US). Was able to spot 23 species of birds. No one at home could believe they live so close to so many birds! Here are some pics you might find interesting.

Grey Catbird (sounds like a kitten when it is not mimicking:

Turkey Vulture for comparison purposes!

Song Sparrow

Yellow-crowned Night Heron (with a reed between my camera and its head)

Snowy Egret which I think is a lot like Little Egret which you have there:

(an older shot for reference)

Osprey can be found in Southern Africa, but I don't know how abundant they are. Anyway, here are a few:

Excellent pictures DB, the Osprey shots are stunning! It's nice to enlighten the unbelievers from time to time and see how surprised they are about how many birds are around.

Ô¿Ô

P.S. Gordon, I still have the same problem viewing the images in DB's posts. It's not my ISP blocking them because I can see them after I've opened each one in a new tab, and I've added DB's domain to my trusted sites in IE8 but I still can't see the images when I open the thread. Any ideas?

Thanks Dave! I'm sorry you are still having problems viewing my photos. I hope its not something I am doing <!-- s:scratchchin: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/scratchchin.gif" alt=":scratchchin:" title="Perplexed" /><!-- s:scratchchin: -->

Does this work better?

edit: No, those didn't work. I think I am doing it right <!-- s:scratchchin: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/scratchchin.gif" alt=":scratchchin:" title="Perplexed" /><!-- s:scratchchin: --> <!-- s:hypnodisk: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/hypnodisk.gif" alt=":hypnodisk:" title="Hypnotised" /><!-- s:hypnodisk: -->

It's OK, DB, it's nothing you're doing wrong because other people can see the images OK, just a few of us who can't. If I get time today I'll re-install Firefox and see if that helps. If it does, I'll kick IE8 into touch because I'm not the greatest fan of Microsoft's software, it always seems to be several years behind what everyone else is doing. I reckon MS actually has a "Why didn't we think of that?" department that trawls the net looking for ways to improve their woefully inadequate software by using other peoples' ideas. Maybe someone should explain to them the difference between "proactive" and "reactive".

That aside, your photos are really good, what equipment do you use?

OK, I've found the source of the problem, though I can't explain why it doesn't affect everyone. There's an error in the HTML coding. Without giving a long boring explanation of how HTML works, suffice it to say that the links to your images should have what's called an 'opening tag' before them and a 'closing tag' after them. They would normally be in brackets but if I use the brackets here you won't be able to see what I've typed. Basically, before your image link there should be brackets with IMG in them (the opening tag) then after it there should be brackets with /IMG in them (the backslash indicates a closing tag). For some reason, the closing tags are missing from your post and your opening tags have a backslash after the URL that shouldn't be there.

As I said, it's strange that some people can see them and others can't, must a be a browser setting that automatically corrects HTML errors or something. Do you use your own HTML code or do you use the shortcuts that the board provides (the so-called BBCode)? Try this: when you come to the point where you want to insert an image, click the 'Img' button you see above the text area and put the URL of your image between the two bracketed words that appear. See if that makes a difference (I think it will).

Hi Dave,

OK, last night when I replied I could see all my photos with no problems. This morning, all I see is the word 'image'!! I switched the view in Firefox to "Corel IE tabs" which is supposed to make it run like IE. Then I just had broken links.

I tried to edit my post, but it still looks ok. The brackets are there. I used the link above the post each time I attached a photo. This is copied from the post when I tried to edit:

Brackets are there, no '/' in the opening, only the closing. Here is a copy again with a space added after the first [ each time so it doesn't read as a link:

It seems to me, then, that something on your system is changing the HTML after you post it. When you right click and select 'view source' what you get is this: ( img src=" darthbangkok.smugmug.com/Wildlife/North-...770_beReE-L.jpg" ; alt="Image" / ) I've replaced the HTML brackets with normal brackets and also added a space, but that is HTML and not BBCode. There's no sign of the [ brackets that the BBCode uses. Maybe just check that BBCode is on. Below the text area is a tick box that says 'Disable BBCode' - make sure that is unticked and that under the heading of 'options' (to the left of the tick box) everything is listed as 'ON'.

Other than that, I have no idea why the [ img][ /img] doesn't appear in the source code.

Interesting problem. I am busy researching why the closing HTML </img> tag (and not the [/img]) is being left off. Strange that it happens on this post and not on others.

Interesting...

Standard html image tags do not normally need to be closed with a /> nor do they need </img>, that is only needed for strict xhtml, so in theory the image tags are correct.

My next thought was that the Bulletin Board software is blocking the image, so I tested the image source using the w3schools website:

I took the link for the Simply Birding logo as well as one of the images from the smugmug website (you can see for yourselves at: http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tryit.asp ... ge_diffloc )

So the issue appears to be from Smugmug. I suspect they might be blocking [u:gyse2hxh]direct[/u:gyse2hxh] links to images embedded in other sites including forums?

darth, maybe for future use the URL tags to the image so viewers can open the Smugmug link in another tab in their browser.

Thanks!
Gordon

Another option would be something like Photobucket which I use to "host" most of my images.

No hassles with embedded links. Thanks for the nice pics though.
