Just returned from the KNP, we camped at Berg-en-dal and birding was great. I had to concentrate on the larger birds as I was the only birder in the group and could not shout STOP and stare at a LBJ whenever I wanted to! Raptors were abundant with everyday sightings of White-faced Vultures, Lapped-faced Vultures, White-backed Vultures, Tawny Eagle, Brown Snake Eagle, Fish Eagle, Gabar Goshawk, Bateleur and African Wood-owl to name just a few.

Here are some pics!

Juvenile Gabar Goshawk

White-faced Vulture

Black Stork

Maribou Stork

Very pale Tawny Eagle

Lapped-faced Vulture

Juvenile White-breasted Cormorant and Water Thick-knee's

I consider myself extremely lucky living so close to the Kruger National Park!

Great pics, I love the birding at Berg and Dal. In January when we were there I was atlassing and found a Cutthroat Finch, for which I received an "out of range form", I also found Dusky Indigobirds having a barney on the walking trail next to the river walk, so there is always something special to find if you have the timeI'm heading up there in the middle of April with my sister who's visiting from New Zealand. Can't wait.

Thank-you Jenni for sharing these photos.
It was interesting to read about the Cutthroat Finch at Berg and Dal.
My parents live in Marloth Park, near Crocodile Bridge, and Cutthroat Finch has been seen often over the past few years and sometimes in groups of around 10.
Kind regards,
Michael

Great shot of the White-headed Vulture - for me the most photogenic of the Kruger vultures.

Cut-throat Finch has been a regular at the river-front chalets at Ngwenya Lodge near Komatipoort for at least the last 5 years! I had accepted that is was "part of the furniture" there, although when first I saw it there the furthest south I had seen it in Kruger before that was at Satara.

Cut-throat Finches are very common in the Nelspruit Nature Reserve, I see at least one every time I visit the reserve. I was under the impression that most of the Kruger and Lowveld areas are their normal habitat (according to my map-reading skills and Roberts' distribution map). I also observed a large group of them in Boksburg (Sunward Park) in January - Is this their normal range? I will try to attend a course on map reading in the meantime...........

I don't think it had ever been recorded in the Berg en Dal Pentad, hence the ORF, but my sighting was accepted, and it is now shown on the SABAP2 birdlist for Pentad 2525_3125.
