jan created the topic: Pilanesberg Raptor ID
Hi All

This raptor is still currently giving me trouble. It was seen in Pilanesberg around Easter. Any ideas about ID?

Thank you

Jan

Hi Jan,

Looks interesting... I'm sending your image to some others to see what they say.

Cheers,
Gordon

Hi Jan,

I haven't had any other replies yet but I would go with one of the following:
1. Long-crested Eagle
2. Verreaux's Eagle (though wing shape in this photo looks wrong)
3. Dark phase Whalbergs Eagle (also not too happy with wing shape)
4. Very remote way out idea of Greater Spotted Eagle (I was tired at the time)...

Other raptors like the kites, goshawks, buzzards etc have far too different colouring, shape, size, behaviour to fit with the bird in your image.

Maybe there are others out there willing to take a stab at it? <!-- s:angelic-blueglow: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/angelic/blueglow.gif" alt=":angelic-blueglow:" title="Blue Glow" /><!-- s:angelic-blueglow: -->

Did you get any other images?

Cheers,
Gordon

Hi Jan, I have lightened the images up a bit to try expose more features.

Looks good for a Long-Crested Eagle to me.

What do you feel about it? What were your thoughts?

Cheers,
Gordon

Hi

Thanks for all the help. I did not have a specific direction of thought, because the bird in my photos does not really look that close to any of the pictures in the books!

Regards
Jan

Hi Jan,

Yes it can be confusing especially having to wade through so many potential species and variations!

Hi Jan,

Got some feedback from Erik via Facebook, he mentioned it very likely being a species I had totally forgotten about, that being European Honey Buzzard!

Looking at the barring on the tail it may well be a dark version of them.

Cheers,
Gordon
