Hi Guys,

Photographed this snake eagle today about 25km N of Porterville in the Western Cape province. I'd put it down as a Brown Snake Eagle except my Sasol guidebook says we don't get them here... So what's the verdict please? It was eating a decent-sized snake, and as the photo shows has the distinctive snake-eagle head (or so it looks to me anyway).

I'm sure anyone more familiar with these will know immediately. The white feathers on it's neck are just underplumage (is that a word??) being displayed by the quite strong wind...

Thanks in advance,

Mads S, normally Denmark but currently Porterville/SA

Juvenile black chested snake eagle, although I'm no expert?

Hi Northcliffbirder81, we thought of that as well but it does seem rather dark compared to the drawings and photos we have been able to dig out? The juvenile black-chested is given as tawny rather than this deep dark brown...

Any other ideas? Or arguments?

Thanks,

With those dark brown leggings I can't think that it could be anything else but a Brown Snake-Eagle.

They are not as uncommon in the Cape as what one may think. Looking a the SABAP2 reports, they definitely occur in the Western Cape.

Hi Wildtuinman,

Thanks for your reply - that is precisely what I thought when I saw the bird.

Distribution maps in 15 year old books can be a bit confusing/misleading,
